The Fiduciary Accountant will be responsible for working with the firms fiduciary clients and assisting with the management and maintenance of fiduciary accounts in strict compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and ethical obligations. This role includes the preparation of Federal Estate Tax Returns (Form 706), New Jersey Inheritance Tax Returns (Form IT-R), New York Estate Tax Returns (Form ET-706), and Federal Gift Tax Returns (Form 709), as well as support for fiduciary income tax reporting. The Fiduciary Accountant ensures accurate tax compliance, timely reconciliations, and clear reporting, while serving as a key resource for attorneys and staff regarding fiduciary accounting matters. Will consider part-time.
** Key Responsibilities **
1. Prepare and file Federal Estate Tax Returns (Form 706), New Jersey Inheritance Tax Returns (Form IT-R) and New York Estate Tax Returns (Form ET-706).
- Manage process including communication with client, appraisers, accountants, financial advisors and other relevant parties.
- Collect information necessary to prepare returns and ensure completeness and accuracy
- Coordinate with attorneys to ensure presentation in accordance with provisions of relevant estate planning documents
2. Preparation of ancillary forms, as necessary
3. Provide support for IRS or state examinations and communicate with auditors, as necessary
4. Preparation of Federal Gift Tax Returns (Form 709)
- Communicate and coordinate with client and all other relevant parties
- Coordinate with attorneys to ensure presentation achieves estate planning objectives
5. Preparation of Formal and Informal Accountings for Estates, Trusts and Guardianships
6. Facilitate other aspects of Estate and Trust administration and termination
- Deferred tax payment calculations, distribution worksheets, etc.
7. Provide support for Estate and Trust litigation matters
Qualifications
1. Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
2. Minimum 3-5 years of fiduciary, trust, and estate accounting experience; prior law firm or financial institution experience strongly preferred.
3. Strong knowledge of fiduciary accounting principles, estate and trust administration, and tax reporting requirements.
4. Demonstrated experience preparing estate, inheritance, and gift tax returns (Forms 706, 709, IT-R, ET-706).
5. Proficiency in accounting and tax preparation software; experience with fiduciary or trust/estate accounting platforms preferred.
6. High attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
7. Strong written and verbal communication skills for interaction with attorneys, staff, clients, and courts.
8. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
9. Strong ethical standards and understanding of confidentiality obligations.
Preferred Skills
1. CPA license or progress toward CPA designation.
2. Experience with fiduciary income tax preparation (Forms 1041 and state equivalents).
3. Knowledge of law firm operations and professional responsibility rules related to client funds.
